In 2060 BS (2002 AD), the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) was founded and an MD and MS programme was launched. The NAMS is incorporated in Bir Hospital.

As associated hospitals for the programme, NAMS has chosen Maternity Hospital Thapathali, Kanti Children Hospital Maharajgunj, Nepal Army Hospital, Patan Hospital, and Nepal Eye Hospital.Programs are being run under the Memorandum of Understanding with these hospitals.

At the moment, this institute accepts about 100 MD, MS, and MDS residents yearly. In a similar vein, a super specialised fellowship course in neurosurgery was launched in 2061 BC as a Fellow of the national academy of medical sciences (FNAMS) (2004 AD).

Also beginning in 2067 BC where the degrees of Doctor of Medicine and Master of Surgery (DM, M.Ch) (2010 AD).An educational facility called the National Academy of Medical Sciences is situated in Nepal.
